In the hours after a fire that took the home of Kimberly Newbern, assistant director of the Curris Center and Student Life, the Murray community responded in support of her.

The Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity said in a Facebook post that Newbern and her dog, Binx, made it safely out of the fire, but she is now facing an overwhelming reality with replacing all she’s lost.
“Even with insurance, the costs add up quickly and many immediate needs aren’t fully covered,” the fraternity said.
The fraternity posted a link to her GoFundMe.
“We’re coming together to help ease that burden and remind Kimberly that she is not facing this tragedy alone,” the fraternity continued. “Funds directly raised will go to temporary housing and living expenses; clothing, food and basic necessities; replacing essential household items; unexpected costs during recovery and rebuilding.”
Lakeshia Yarbrough, an assistant professor of nursing, also shared information in a Facebook post, outlining how people can support Newbern.
“This is absolutely heartbreaking, especially during this time of year,” Yarbrough said. “Kim is a constant source of care, encouragement and support for our students and campus community, and today she is the one in need. If you are able to help in any way, whether through donations, resources, or prayers, please consider doing so.”
For those interested, donations can be made via PayPal to @KimNewbern and via Venmo to @Kimnewbern85.
Yarbrough’s post also said donations are also being accepted at any CFSB location. Anyone interested can request that the donation be placed into the “Newbern Donation Account.”
“Even the smallest act of kindness can make a meaningful difference during an incredibly difficult moment,” Yarbrough said. “Please keep Kim and her furbaby in your thoughts and prayers as they begin the journey of rebuilding.”
